It’s the biggest day of American sport and the prime opportunity for musical artists to display their talent in front of a huge audience of watchers as the XLVIII Super Bowl kicked off today. This year Grammy winner Bruno Mars was the chosen one to follow up last year’s unforgettable Beyonce performance during the halftime show, collaborating with veteran rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The 29-year-old singer opened the performance with a drum solo before launching into a selection of his hits, including Locked Out Of Heaven, Treasure and Runaway Baby before being accompanied on stage by Anthony Kiedis and the other members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who appeared shirtless despite the cold New Jersey weather.
Dueting with the classic song Give It Away, Kiedis and Mars gave a great performance that unfortunately lacked excitement or grandeur. Mars then moved onto a soulful rendition of Just The Way You Are, which featured a short video clip of military personnel.
The show ended with a firework display as Bruno thanked the crowd. The NFL had been boasting the event would be “the concert of the year” but comparisons continued to be drawn between Mars and Beyonce, while audiences continued to praise the vibrant young artist on putting on an exceptional show for the biggest sporting night of the year.
