This year’s first awards celebration kicked off today with the 40th Annual People’s Choice Awards at the Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles. Honouring the best in pop culture in 2013, Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls hosted the event where over 700 million people voted for their favourites.
Academy Award winning actress Sandra Bullock won big at Wednesday’s awards, taking home four awards including Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Movie Duo with George Clooney for last year’s epic film Gravity. Comic adaptation Iron Man 3 took home the awards for Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie while TV’s The Big Bang Theory won Favorite TV Comedy with Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny, winning Favorite Comedy TV Actress.
In the music scene, Justin Timberlake won three awards for Favorite Male Arist, Favorite R&B Artist and Favorite Album for his hit record The 20/20 Experience. Britney Spears won her first award for Favorite Pop Artist. “This is awesome,” said Spears, thanking her family, son and management team. Former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson was awarded her second award for Favorite Humanitarian.
Favorite Daytime TV Host went to Ellen DeGeneres, being her 14th award from the show in this category. Justin Timberlake even thanked her in his acceptance speech, saying, “thank you Ellen for the personal inspiration and the cookies – she bakes a hell of a cookie”. “I treasure this because it is from the people, and there is no better thing than knowing you are making people happy,” said DeGeneres.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, who actor on the small screen in The Vampires Diaries and are a real-life ex-couple, won Favorite On-Screen Chemistry, but commented that things weren’t awkward between the two co-stars. The star-studded show featured appearances by Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Zac Efron, Anna Faris and Michael B. Jordan with Sara Bareilles, OneRepublic and Brad Paisley also performing at the ceremony.
