Gravity wins big prize at AACTA Awards

3D science fiction thriller Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney took home Best International Film and Best International Director for Alfonso Cuaron at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.

David O. Russell’s film American Hustle also won Best International Screenplay and Best International Supporting Actress for rising star Jennifer Lawrence. And British director Steve McQueen’s adaptation of Solomon Northup’s autobiography 12 Years A Slave also won Best International Lead Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best International Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender.

Australia’s golden girl Cate Blanchett unexpectedly won Best International Actress for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, a film about a wealthy Manhattan socialite who loses all her money. Despite having an individual section for Australian actresses, Blanchett won in the International category, pushing her chances for winning Best Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards.

The AACTA International awards, in their third year, have become another part of awards season, which ends with the Oscars on March 2. The winners of the awards were announced at an invitation-only function at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles and was hosted by actor Geoffrey Rush.

Other events this awards season includes the Screen Actors Guild Awards and tomorrow’s 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in L.A. The winners of the AACTA Australian Awards will be announced on January 28 and January 30.
